Fix it Myself...are you crazy?
Maybe I am crazy, but I have a working Xbox 360 that once had the red ring of death. And I never had to ship it off to Microsoft and pay expensive repair fees.

It's actually quite simple to fix how to fix three red lights on Xbox 360. You have to understand that this problems stems from the console getting too hot. When it overheats, there is a clamp that holds the GPU (graphics processor) in place. This clamp can bend and cause the solder joints on the GPU to break and give you a hardware malfunction code (the three red lights).

Follow these steps to fix the Xbox 360 yourself. Keep in mind that opening up your console will void the warranty if it's still covered, but this is a permanent fix:

1- Open up your console and take the DVD drive out.
2- Remove the GPU by taking off the X-shaped Clamp (X-clamp) that holds it to the main board
3- Remove the heat sink
4- Use a thermal compound and put the heat sink back on
5- Put the GPU back on but use very thin washers to secure it. This will keep the clamp from vibrating and breaking those solder joints.
6- Now put the console back together and let it run for about 30 minutes, using it's own heat to "re-melt" the solder joints.

In securing the X-clamp, you will keep the console from ever having the three red lights problem again.
