This article is about how somebody as technologically inept as me learned how to fix red ring of death on Xbox 360.
How it Happened
I was playing my favorite game on Xbox 360, Halo 3, when I got the red ring of death. I thought the cord from the Xbox to the TV had come loose somehow.
So I reconnected everything and then tried the console again. Still 3 red lights. I wasn't sure what was going on.
My Call to Microsoft
The first thing I did, after my panic attack (the system cost $300), was call Microsoft help service. I got some foreign outsourced call center and tried to explain to the guy what was going on. He tried walking me through all kinds of troubleshooting steps, like make sure a game is in the console, make sure all the cords are hooked up, and make sure you have batteries in your controller. All I could think about is, I'm not great with technical stuff, but I'm not an idiot. I continued to try to explain that the cords were all hooked up right, but the system just kept flashing 3 red lights at me.
Finally he told me I'd have to ship it off to Microsoft for repair. I asked how much that would set me back and he told me it was $140.
My Alternative Idea
At first I got very depressed. I don't have that kind of money to just throw around. I thought I was going to have to ship my Xbox 360 back to Microsoft, pay the fee plus shipping, and wait weeks to get it back.
I decided to do some online research and found that you can fix red ring of death on Xbox 360 yourself. I decided I'd give it a try.
After working on the console an hour, taking it apart, and reinforcing a part called the X-clamp, I crossed my fingers and turned the console on. I was shocked when it worked. More shocked that a technical illiterate could fix his Xbox 360.
Before you ship your console off to Microsoft, I'd advise having a look at some of the alternative methods of fixing red ring of death on Xbox 360.
I just did a Google search for "Xbox 360 repair guides". 5,730,000 results came up!
